Prevacid (Lansoprazole)

Prevacid decreases the amount of acid produced in the stomach. Prevacid is used to treat and prevent stomach and intestinal ulcers, erosive esophagitis (damage to the esophagus from stomach acid), and other conditions involving excessive stomach acid such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. Prevacid may also be used for other purposes not listed in this medication guide.

Is Prevacid for me ?

• Prevacid I.V. is usually given as an injection at your doctor's office, hospital, or clinic. If you will be using Prevacid I.V. at home, a health care provider will teach you how to use it. Be sure you understand how to use Prevacid I.V. . Follow the procedures you are taught when you use a dose. Contact your health care provider if you have any questions.
• Do not use Prevacid I.V. if it contains particles, is cloudy or discolored, or if the vial is cracked or damaged.
• If you are also taking an imidazole antifungal (eg, ketoconazole), take it at least 2 hours before using Prevacid I.V. .
• Keep this product, as well as syringes and needles, out of the reach of children and pets. Do not reuse needles, syringes, or other materials. Ask your health care provider how to dispose of these materials after use. Follow all local rules for disposal.
• Prevacid I.V. should only be used for a short time (up to 7 days), until you are able to take medicine by mouth. Discuss any questions or concerns with your doctor.
• If you miss a dose of Prevacid I.V. , take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.

Prevacid comes as an extended-release (long-acting) capsule to take it orally. Prevacid usually is taken once a day, before a meal. Take Prevacid exactly as directed. Do not take more or less of it or take it more often than prescribed by your doctor. The capsule should be swallowed whole. If you have difficulty swallowing capsules, Prevacid can be opened, and the granules can be sprinkled on applesauce and swallowed immediately. The granules should not be chewed or crushed. Continue to take Prevacid even if you feel well. Do not stop taking Prevacid without talking to your doctor.
